The best shiraz I’ve had in a long time

The best shiraz I’ve had in a long time

I rarely post reviews but this just blew me away and thought that those of you not in Adelaide may not have got to see it – wonderful writing.

Read Philip White’s article…

Something happened in the Shiraz class – a review by Phillip White

“The Castagna Genesis Beechworth Shiraz 2014 is 12.5% alcohol and $75. It contains “a touch of Viognier”. It is a magic drink.”

“I like the way this vineyard has spent fifteen vintages morphing form extra-terrestrial, like that UFO 1999, through a maritime approach then back to shore after this new vintage takes a night emptying its sails of gust, nudges its rubbing stakes against the bar and starts unloading fruit on the wharf where the fresh flowers, herbs and spices are stacked up to the galvo.”

Phillip White 2016

This fantastic review of our Castagna 2014 Genesis Syrah is now on the InDaily website and Phillip’s blog. A beautifully crafted review, of our beautifully crafted shiraz. Phillip never ceases to amaze us with his eloquent and picturesque writing, creating vivid images of our wines and vineyard in his reviews. Head to Phillip’s blog here, or InDaily,  to read the full review.

Castagna Genesis Syrah wins the Victorian Red Wine of Provenance trophy for the 2nd successive year!

Those of you who follow us will know that I am very reluctant to enter our wines into the show system.  But was talked into entering the Royal Melbourne Wine Show last year where, to my delight, we were awarded two trophies; one for our Vermouth and the other for Genesis, which won The Victorian Red Wines of Provenance.

Castagna Genesis Victorian Trophy for Red Wines of Provenance

This year I was again reluctant – in fact positively determined – that we shouldn’t get involved.  Putting aside my own personal opinion about the show system, there seemed to me no point at all in risking fate.  After all, we had had a very good result last year, so why not leave it at that?

Adam didn’t agree.  And after much badgering he ‘persuaded’ me that we should again enter ‘The Victorian Red Wines of Provenance’.

We entered Castagna Genesis Syrah 2002-2005-2012and much to my surprise and delight we were again awarded the Trophy. The Trophy in two successive years is both a joy and a delight, and helps cement and communicate the wonderful terroir that is Beechworth.

As this has happened just before our Open Day on the 29th October – which is a thank you to our customers – it gives me a chance to open a magnum of one of the early wines, to show off how wonderful the wine actually is.

Speaking of tastings, check out what someone’s clever fingers created during a recent tasting here at Castagna Vineyard.

A clever wine lover created this little guy from a Castagna Sparkling Genesis cage. Danni has named him Sergio.

For some perspective.                Sergio may be diminutive, but gee, he is one sparkly guy…

Spring and a new batch of Castagna Wines

Even though most people in the North East Victoria would argue this point, it is starting to look like Spring even more here at Castagna Vineyard. We have had above average rainfalls the last month or so, and our vines are looking divine! It’s hard to believe these little shoots will grow taller than the posts and create a wall of cool, dark green leaves, interspersed with bunches of luscious fruit, all ready to be harvested in late Summer, early Autumn next year.

All the animals in our menagerie are enjoying the warmer weather too. We use fowl (both chooks and guinea fowl) as a form of pest control and to enrich our soils. It’s also an amusing past time to sit on the veranda at the end of a long day, glass of something yummy in hand (Castagna of course!) and watch the grandchildren chase the chooks off the vegetable garden for us!

Jim Lockard’s write up of Castagna wines at the Artisans of Australia tasting

Nice write up of Castagna wines from Jim Lockard in his blog Jim Lockard on Wine.

Here is little excerpt from Jim’s Australian Wine Tasting in London post, about his time at the recent Artisans of Australia tasting in London that both Adam and Julian attended.

Castagna Wines: The father and son team of Julian and Adam Castagna were presiding over their table with aplomb. Their Rhône-focused vineyard & winery deliver the goods. Their wines were consistently well made and nicely balanced

…Standouts were the 2016 Rousanne, bottled a week ago, and already moving toward becoming a great white wine. The highlight, however, is their 2008 Sparkling Genesis Shiraz-Viognier, a dark red sparkler that delivers great taste and can be paired with just about anything, including meat. This is an amazing wine.

Castagna in good company

Brilliant picture sent in by a Castagna connoisseur, who enjoyed our wine with friends in New Zealand. We love to see people enjoying our wine, and to see Castagna in such a line up is fabulous (although we are not sure about the All Blacks!)

Thanks Vaughn.

Beechworth and Castagna – wet but still glorious!

So the rain came to Beechworth again, but it is still beautiful here in North-East Victoria. Tiny leaves bursting out of the buds show that Vintage 2017 is on its way.
