"A great nose. Superlative before it hits the palate. Tight. Compact. Wonderful tension. The tannins, a benchmark of extraction for others to emulate. Clove, pepper, nori and blueberry. Mid-weighted and beautifully furled, unravelling screw by screw; joint by joint; joinery by joinery; detail by detail, strongly suggesting that this will be a wine of the ages 97" Ned Goodwin MW
"A brew of forestry scents of pine, autumnal mulch, mint, anise and porcini broth, warm and nourishing. The tannins, fine boned and long limbed. As yet unresolved. Yet this wine promises the most of the Italianate expressions here. The darker tones of fruit, a backdrop. The oak, an addendum. Long, edgy and fresh. An extremely convincing wine with pedigree and ageability written all over it 96" Ned Goodwin MW
"A very different animal to the 16. Herbal. Sassafras. A carapace of firm twine soused tannins binds the more reclusive fruit to future possibility, rather than imminence. Sour cherry, orange zest, scoops of liquorice all-sorts and cardamon. Mid-weighted despite the higher alcoholic buffering. More savoury and bony over sumptuous in this nascent stage. The 17’s boast a saline core with ferrous edges. Mulch and forestry undertones meld with Sangiovese’s inherent friskiness, serving to mitigate the higher alcohol of the vintage. Ironically, this vintage feel more compact and mid-weight despite the higher alcohol 95" Ned Goodwin MW
On the nose we see smoked sweet meats, boysenberry, darker cherry, kirsch doused with an Indian spice packet of star anise, clove and cardamon.
In the mouth it has beautifully perfumed, fruity element with energy and verve adding complexity to the medium-bodied, textured raspberry red fruit.
The now familiar Castagna tannins are exceptionally fine with dusty, spicy oak and lovely fresh acidity.
Not quite Genesis but a wine of amazing value.
"It’s medium weight, rises on blood orange acidity, cranberry juice flavours. Such superb drinking to be had here." Mike Bennie
"Made mostly with syrah and nebbiolo with a minor portion of sangiovese. All estate-grown. It works for both its savouriness and for its fruitiness. It's all woodsy spice and blue-black berries and while there isn't a great deal of tannin it feels well framed and sustained." Campbell Mattinson
"The ultimate saliva-inducing aperitivo designed to awaken the palate for dinner. Let’s just say I wouldn’t want a tank of this a stone’s throw from my back door – it’s way too dangerously drinkable!" Sarah Ahmed, The Wine Detective
"It displays nicely evolving tannins and juicy acidity, and comes as something of a surprise in this line-up of big-hitters and traditionalists. But it's a spot-on, classy surprise." Decanter Magazine's Australian Shiraz Panel Tasting
"…is possibly the best Australian sangiovese I’ve tasted This is an extraordinary wine…(with) all the signs of greatness. It has all the attributes of high-quality Sangiovese … very seductive." Winewise
"Julian’s vineyard at Beechworth has proved to be an ideal home for the Brunello clone of sangiovese… The palate is richly flavoured, but tight, suggesting that over a decade of positive evolution lies ahead." Winewise
